The sports nutrition program focuses on the application of nutrition principles as they relate to sport and human performance. Students will explore how nutrition impacts performance. Graduates will be prepared for careers including sports nutrition, personal training or work in the fitness industry, including product development and research. Students may choose to supplement their academic training with national certification in a specific area including personal trainer, strength and conditioning coach or health coach.

So often I’m asked the question “how do I become a sports dietitian?” This article will walk you through the steps to take to become a sports RD, and I’ll be sharing a bit of my personal experiences along the way.

There are many excellent sports nutritionist schools. Sports and nutrition degree options usually include a Bachelor of Science in Nutrition or Sports Nutrition. A sports nutritionist degree program is ideal given the specialized nature of the field. Some schools offer a sports nutrition concentration. If the school that you plan on attending doesn’t offer specific sports nutritionist education, the curriculum for a bachelor’s degree in nutrition will suffice.

To be sure, the challenge isn’t always just about knowing what and how much to eat. It’s also important to recognize that life circumstances can impact good nutrition. For example, youth athletes living in urban areas or in lower-income households may have difficulty getting regular access to high-quality foods, like fresh fruits, vegetables, and meats.

(Here’s the math: 150 pounds of body weight x 2-3 grams of carbs = 300-450 g total carbs. Then 300 g or 450 g of total carbs / 25 g carbs per cupped-hand serving = 12-18 cupped handfuls of carbs per day.)

My philosophy is food first and supplements second. Supplements are meant to simply supplement your balanced nutrition program and sometimes are necessary.
